Satisfaction with social relationships was assessed with
items (adapted) from the Social Relationships in Adult Life
Questionnaire (Kahn & Antonucci, 1980). Participants were
asked three single questions about their satisfaction with friendship
relationships, family relationships, and relationships in
general.
In addition participants were asked whether they had broken off
contact with any relatives. And, if this was the case, who those
persons were (see: Negative aspects of social relationships). These
answers were coded in terms of type of relationship.

Negative aspects of social relationships were assessed within the social relationships questionnaire of the intensive protocol only at Time 1. Participants were asked four single questions concerning negative aspects of social relationship: (1) demands, (2) time-budgeting, (3) offenses, and (4) how many persons constantly get participant upset (the latter three developed in the BASE project group, see items used in BASE). Remarks which were made spontaneously by participants when answering the fourth question (e. g. "My daughter...") were noted and coded in terms of the type of relationship. Therefore, for some of the participants there is additional information about who constantly upsets them. Also, there is information, if participants had broken contact to any relatives (1 = no, 2 = yes) and who those persons were.
